22nt caisson installed for New Genoa Breakwater
- One kilometre of total length achieved for breakwater under construction

GENOA, May 26, 2026 – Construction of the New Genoa Breakwater is progressing at a steady pace, with the successful installation of the 22nd caisson just three days after the 21st being put into place. With this latest milestone, the new breakwater has reached the one kilometre in length, confirming the robustness of the plan being implemented by the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.
Alongside the installation of the caissons, seabed consolidation activities are also continuing, a crucial part of the works to ensure the stability and durability of the breakwater. The construction site operates seven days a week, carrying out highly complex works that involves advanced technologies and highly specialised expertise.
More than 1,000 workers are involved in the project, engaged daily in an integrated process of activities that brings together a wide range of professionals: engineers, technicians, boat operators, divers, and other personnel specialised in offshore operations and port logistics. This collective effort represents an important opportunity to enhance maritime professions, a key element of Genoa’s heritage, enhanced with modern standards of safety, innovation and training.
The New Genoa Breakwater confirms its role not only as a strategic infrastructure for the development of the port and the city, but also as a major industrial project capable of creating qualified jobs and skills.
Together with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi and Genoa Junction projects, which also being built by Webuild, the New Genoa Breakwater will strengthen the central role of the Ligurian port in Northern Italy and European
trade flows, enhancing its competitiveness and adapting its port system to the new dynamics of international maritime traffic.
