Webuild: latest caisson placed, bringing new Genoa Breakwater to 1,670 metres in length

  • The new structure will allow new generation container ships to enter the port, strengthening its role as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean
  • Work proceeds in the manufacture of the caissons and the preparation of the seabed for their installation

MILAN, October 13, 2026 – Work proceeds at full rhythm for the construction of the New Genoa Breakwater. With the installation of the latest caisson – the second such operation in eight days - the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, has so far built 1,670 metres of the structure. This latest milestone confirms the uninterrupted progress of the project on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.

In the meantime, at the Vado Ligure work site, the construction of the next caissons proceeds. The giant structures of reinforced concrete are later towed out to sea to where they are then sunk and set in place. The concrete is made of a special mixture designed to respond to the demands of a project of this kind, guaranteeing its durability in a particularly aggressive environment, characterised by rough waves, salt water and the wind.

The various stages of work both onshore and offshore proceed in tandem – from the production of the caissons to the preparation of the seabed, from the filling of the interior of the caissons to their placement on the seabed - a process that requires a precise execution and coordinated operation.

Built on the seabed at depths reaching 50 metres, the New Genoa Breakwater is an unprecedented engineering. Once completed, it will enable the Port of Genoa to accommodate new generations of large container ships, boosting capacity, accessibility and competitiveness. It will also consolidate the city’s strategic role in logistics connections between the Mediterranean, Italy and continental Europe.
