Work begins on crest wall of New Genoa Breakwater. New caisson also installed offshore

• Work starts on crest - or wave - wall to reduce combined impact of surface and underwater waves in order to protect the Port of Genoa
• Works proceeds underwater with installation of latest caisson

 MILAN, September 8, 2026 – Work has begun on the installation of the crest – or wave – wall of the New Genoa Breakwater, the part that sits on top of the submerged caissons in front of the Port of Genoa. The builders of the breakwater, the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium led by Webuild on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, will work on the crest wall as they proceed with the installation of the project’s remaining caissons, the 32nd of which was recently set in place. 

The crest wall will cover the top of the breakwater. At a height of approximately seven metres above sea level, the crest wall will be the visible part of the breakwater. Once completed, it will protect the access channel to the port as well as the harbour from large waves caused by stormy weather. 

The New Genoa Breakwater, which reaches depths of up to 50 metres, is one of the biggest maritime infrastructure projects underway in Europe. Once completed, it will enable the Port of Genoa to accommodate the latest generation of container ships, improving its competitiveness in the Mediterranean.

Together with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction Project, also being delivered by Webuild, the breakwater will contribute to the integration of the port and rail systems, reinforcing the logistics corridor linking Italy with other markets within the European Union.
